Cubanos = Yummos!
The Cuban Pork Sandwich is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time. It seriously makes my mouth water just thinking about that fall apart pork and salty off-the-bone ham ... and those tangy pickles ... holy moly! I've died and gone to heaven. Mikes and I order this at Zupas every chance we get. Do you have a Zupas where you are? I hope so. It's magical, and I obviously recommend the Cuban sandwich. And the healthy natural sugar lemonade is bomb too. For this sammy I slow cooked the pork in beer (after browning it of course) on low for about eight hours. It turned out great. I have been on a kick with slow cooking pork with beer. It turns out real nice. Plus it gives you an excuse to have a beer on a random Monday night.
Some don't call this a Cuban pressed sandwich for nothing. What makes this sandwich even more delicious is the crusty panini pressed baguette that holds all of the yumminess together. It's like a next level Cuban grilled cheese. Sign me up folks! The World Market bake at home baguette I used crisps up perfectly in the panini press. I think the Cubano usually calls for swiss cheese. Maybe I'm letting my love for smoked gouda get the best of me, but I think it would be fun to experiment here with some other cheeses like this delectable variety. What do you think? Am I just crazy in love? Now for the mustard, I would not use yellow mustard. I really think you need the wholegrain mustard here. The link is the kind I used, and it was great. Do you have a favorite brand?
I hope you have as much of a passion for Cubanos as I do. And if not, I hope this recipe gives you that passion. How fun is it to say Cubanos by the way? It just rolls off the tongue and makes me feel worldly for a second, even though I have only been out of the country a few times in my life. These might be fun to make for Cinco De Mayo. Different country, but geography has never been my strong suit. But this makes for a fun party recipe. I partnered with my buddies at World Market on this post (I just love them), so hop on over to their blog (link below) to check out the full recipe and instructions. P.S. I'd love to hear your take on the Cubano sandwich. What is your version?
